Marrakech Airport to the City
Menara airport sits about five kilometres from Jemaa el-Fna, which makes the run from Marrakech airport to city centre one of the shortest of any major destination and one of the most argued about. Four ways in are available: bus 19, which has a printed half-hourly timetable and is the only firmly documented thing on this page; the taxi rank on the esplanade, where a fixed zone tariff applies and two different official sources give two different figures for it; the prepaid single-window desk in arrivals; and a booked private transfer with the price agreed before you fly. Below are the timetable, both tariff figures, the reason they disagree, and what the airport operator actually says in its own words. Everything checked in Q3 2026, and where nobody publishes a number this page says so instead of inventing one. The starting point for a whole trip is the full Marrakech guide.
Quick answer Four ways in, one of them properly documented
Bus 19 runs from the airport to Gueliz in 30 minutes, leaving at :15 and :45 past every hour from 06:15 to 21:15, the same on every day of the week. That timetable comes from the Commune de Marrakech's own PDF and is the single firmest fact about airport transport in this city. The fare, $3.20 (30 MAD) single and $5.33 (50 MAD) return, comes from the official destination guide rather than from the airport operator, which publishes no figure at all.
Key takeaways
- The taxi rank on the esplanade works to a fixed zone tariff, and two official sources give two different figures for it. Both are printed here, because the discrepancy is what you actually meet at the rank.
- For two people arriving in daylight the bus wins on price and loses on convenience; past 21:15 there is no bus at all and the rank is the only public option.
- A private transfer booked before you fly fixes the price and the driver in advance, which is the version most people want after a night flight.
- Vehicles cannot reach most medina addresses, so every option ends in a walk. Getting around Marrakech explains why, and where to stay covers what it means for the address you pick.
The four ways from Menara into the city
The options compared on price, time and how well each figure is sourced, from the Commune de Marrakech line 19 timetable, the official destination guide, press reporting on the prefectural tariff decision and the platform listings, all read in Q3 2026.
| Way in | Time | What it costs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus 19 | 30 minutes to Gueliz | $3.20 (30 MAD) single, $5.33 (50 MAD) return | Daylight arrivals with light luggage |
| Rank taxi, by zone tariff | 20 to 25 minutes to the medina | $10.65 to $17.04 (100 to 160 MAD) by distance zone | Anyone landing after the last bus |
| Prepaid desk in arrivals | Same ride, ordered first | The authorities' rate for your destination, paid up front | Avoiding a negotiation while jet-lagged |
| Booked private transfer | About 20 minutes, named driver | Fixed when you book, per vehicle | Night flights, families, a first visit |
The bus figure is the weakest-sourced number in this table: the airport operator publishes no fare, the commune's timetable prints times but no price, and the previous bus operator's own website no longer lists Marrakech at all. Carry the fare in small notes and treat it as an estimate rather than a tariff.
Bus 19: the one airport service with a printed timetable
This is the best-documented thing on the page, so it is worth setting out exactly what is documented and what is not. The Commune de Marrakech hosts the line's timetable as a PDF, and we read it in full in Q3 2026.
The sheet is headed Ligne N 19, departure AEROPORT, arrival GUELIZ, with the journey time printed as 30 minutes and the note that the times are identical from Monday to Saturday and on Sunday. Departures from the airport run at :15 and :45 past every hour from 06:15 through to 19:45, then 20:15 and 21:15. That is a strict half-hourly clockface with no seasonal variation and no weekend timetable, which is unusual enough to be worth trusting.
One oddity comes with it. The sheet is headed HORAIRE BUS ALSA MARRAKECH, and ALSA has not run the network since the handover to Supratours. The timetable is therefore the most specific document available and also, on its face, out of date. We print it because nothing has replaced it and because a printed clockface beats three websites that disagree.
| What | Figure | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| First departure from the airport | 06:15 | Commune de Marrakech timetable, primary |
| Last departure from the airport | 21:15 | Commune de Marrakech timetable, primary |
| Frequency | Every 30 minutes, at :15 and :45 | Commune de Marrakech timetable, primary |
| Journey time to Gueliz | 30 minutes as printed | Commune de Marrakech timetable, primary |
| Single fare | $3.20 (30 MAD) | Official destination guide, not the airport |
| Return fare | $5.33 (50 MAD) | An airport information site, second tier |
Three sources, three frequencies
Worth knowing before you stand at the stop wondering. The airport operator's own page says a shuttle runs chaque 20 min. The official destination guide also says every 20 minutes, and gives service hours of 06:00 to 21:30. The commune's timetable lists every single departure at 30-minute intervals from 06:15 to 21:15.
We prefer the timetable, because it is the specific document rather than a summary sentence, and because it names each departure rather than describing a pattern. Plan on half-hourly, arrive at the stop ten minutes early, and treat an earlier bus as a bonus.
The route, and where it puts you down
The line runs from the terminal out along Avenue Mohammed VI, through Hivernage, past the Arset El Bilk stop by the Koutoubia which is the medina stop most visitors want, then on by Bab Doukkala to Gueliz, also serving the railway station and the coach station. The endpoints and the 30-minute run come from the commune's timetable; the intermediate stop names come from the destination guide and an airport information site rather than from an authority's stop list, so treat them as a description of the route rather than a schedule.
The stop is outside the terminal, past the taxi rank, and tickets are bought from the driver in cash. That detail is repeated by the airport information site rather than published by the airport operator, which is the pattern for almost everything on this page.
Timetable retrieved and parsed from ville-marrakech.ma line 19 PDF in Q3 2026; fares from visitmarrakech.com and aeroport-marrakech.com, neither of which is the airport operator; the twenty-minute claim from the airport operator's own archived Taxi et Bus page.
The taxi rank, and two official figures that do not agree
This is the part of the journey that generates the arguments, and the reason is not what visitors assume. The problem is not that the tariff is secret; it is that two official sources publish different numbers and neither publishes the underlying document.
A Marrakech prefectural decision of April 2023 replaced the old single airport price with seven distance zones, starting at a minimum for anything under three kilometres and rising with distance, with a night rate applying from 21:00 in summer and 20:00 in winter until six in the morning. The official destination guide, meanwhile, still prints a flat day rate and a flat night rate for the airport to the city centre, and those numbers are lower than the zone minimum. Both are official-ish.
Only one can be what is on the board.
| Distance from the airport | Zone-decision fare | Destination-guide fare | What is at that distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3 km | $10.65 (100 MAD) | $7.46 (70 MAD) day, $10.65 (100 MAD) night | Nothing a visitor is going to |
| 3 to 5 km | $11.72 (110 MAD) | Same flat figure | Gueliz, about 4.1 km out |
| 5 to 7 km | $12.78 (120 MAD) | Same flat figure | Jemaa el-Fna, about 5.3 km out |
| 13 to 15 km | $17.04 (160 MAD) | Not addressed | The Palmeraie hotels and beyond |
| Night rate, city | $12.78 (120 MAD) | $10.65 (100 MAD) | From 21:00 in summer, 20:00 in winter |
What the airport operator actually says
Its own page carries no figure whatsoever. The wording, translated, is that there is a taxi rank on the airport esplanade and that fares for the different destinations are displayed at the Parking Taxi. That is the whole of it.
So the citable object is the board at the rank, not any website including this one. The zone decision is the more specific and the more recent of the two published figures and the one this page would bet on; the destination guide's flat numbers look like a pre-2023 figure that was never updated. Read the board before you get in, name your destination clearly, and expect drivers to open above whatever it says, because that is the gap the discrepancy creates.
The distances that decide your zone
Straight-line distances from the airport's recorded position: about 4.1 kilometres to Gueliz and about 5.3 kilometres to Jemaa el-Fna. Road distance is longer than either, so the medina sits in the third zone rather than the second on any realistic routing, and Gueliz sits on the boundary. That puts a normal daytime arrival in the middle of the zone table rather than at its minimum, which is worth knowing before somebody quotes you the minimum and then adds to it.
The arrête itself is not online. The commune's site carries no tariff decision, we crawled it in Q3 2026, and the airport operator's pages return 403 to any automated request. The zone figures reach the open web only through Moroccan press reporting of the decision, which is why this page prints them as reported rather than as read.
Zone structure and thresholds from press reporting of the April 2023 prefectural decision, corroborated independently by the jurist analysis of taxi tariff-setting in Morocco; the flat day and night figures from the official destination guide; the airport operator's wording from an archived snapshot of its own Taxi et Bus page, the live version being unreachable in Q3 2026.
The prepaid desk in arrivals
The airport operator's own answer to the tariff argument is a single-window desk where you buy the ride before you meet the driver.
The operator announced a guichet unique branded kech.cab for pre-ordering and booking taxis at Menara. The described mechanism is straightforward: you state your destination at a desk near the arrivals exit, pay by card or in cash at the rate fixed by the competent authorities for that destination, and receive a receipt to scan for a ticket showing the taxi's number and its position in the queue.
We could not read the announcement first-hand. The operator's own news page returned 403 like everything else on that domain, so the detail above comes from search-result summaries of it rather than from the page itself. Treat the desk as a real and useful thing that exists, and the description of exactly how it works as reported rather than verified. If it is open when you land, it removes the negotiation entirely, which is worth a few minutes of queueing after a long flight.
Operator news release on the kech.cab single-window desk; the page itself returned 403 in Q3 2026 and the detail comes from search-result summaries.
Which one to actually take
The decision comes down to how many of you there are, what time you land, and where you are sleeping. Here is the reasoning rather than a recommendation you have to take on trust.
Whether a taxi is expensive depends entirely on what you compare it to: the zone table runs from $10.65 (100 MAD) to $17.04 (160 MAD), which is cheap against a European airport run and three to five times the bus for the same thirty minutes. Solo, in daylight, with a small bag: take the bus. At $3.20 (30 MAD) it is roughly a third of the cheapest zone taxi fare, it runs every half hour to a printed timetable, and thirty minutes to Gueliz is not materially slower than a taxi in traffic.
Two people, in daylight: the bus is still cheaper at $6.39 (60 MAD) for the pair against $12.78 (120 MAD) for a medina zone taxi, but the margin has halved and the taxi takes you closer to the door. Three or four people: the taxi wins outright on both money and effort.
Any arrival after 21:15: there is no bus, so the rank or a booked transfer is the whole of the choice. A night flight with luggage into a medina address is the case where a private transfer booked in advance earns its price, because the driver waits, the number is fixed, and nobody is negotiating in the dark. A one-way private transfer in English, Arabic, French or Spanish does the same job in one direction if you only want it on arrival.
Leaving again
The same logic runs backwards with one change: the last departure towards the airport is governed by the same 21:15 clock at the airport end, so an early-morning flight has no bus. Book the transfer or agree the taxi the night before through your riad, and give yourself the extra fifteen minutes the medina walk costs at the wrong end of the day.
One more thing to settle before you leave: dirhams cannot legally leave the country beyond a traveller's allowance of 2,000 MAD in banknotes, so change what you are not going to spend before you reach the gate. What Marrakech costs has the reconversion rules and what the counters ask for.
The last two hundred metres, which no transfer covers
Every option on this page ends the same way if you are sleeping inside the walls, and it is the part that surprises first-time arrivals most.
Most riad addresses in the medina cannot be reached by any vehicle. The derbs are too narrow, and a transfer described as door-to-door means door of the nearest accessible point. Riads know this and handle it: they meet arriving guests at a named drop-off, usually a recognised square or gate, and porter the luggage the rest of the way.
What you have to do is ask for that point by name before you travel, and give the riad your arrival time so somebody is standing there. Without it you are on a dark lane at midnight with a wheeled suitcase and a phone map that has lost the thread, being helped by people who will expect to be paid for helping. If your booking is in Gueliz or Hivernage instead, none of this applies and the vehicle reaches the lobby. Where to stay sets out that trade in full, and getting around covers the same problem for every journey after this one.
Transfers with the price fixed before you fly
Two private transfers between Menara and a Marrakech address, both priced per vehicle rather than per person and both booked in advance, which is what removes the rank negotiation from a night arrival. Prices as listed by the operator and read in Q3 2026; each card links to the operator's own page and its live calendar.

Cash before you leave the terminalMenara airport to the city: the questions
How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the medina?
Two official sources give two answers. A prefectural decision of April 2023 created seven distance zones, and on that table the medina at about 5.3 kilometres falls in the third zone at $12.78 (120 MAD), with the zones starting at $10.65 (100 MAD) and reaching $17.04 (160 MAD) at 13 to 15 kilometres. The official destination guide still prints a flat $7.46 (70 MAD) by day and $10.65 (100 MAD) by night. The airport operator publishes no figure at all, saying only that fares are displayed at the Parking Taxi, so the board at the rank is the thing to read before you get in.
What time does the airport bus run?
Departures from the airport are at :15 and :45 past every hour, first at 06:15 and last at 21:15, identical Monday to Sunday, and the printed journey time to Gueliz is 30 minutes. That comes from the Commune de Marrakech's own timetable PDF, which is the only primary document on airport transport in this city. Note that the airport operator's page instead describes a shuttle every 20 minutes and the destination guide says the same, but the timetable is the specific document and it lists every departure.
How much is the bus from Menara airport?
$3.20 (30 MAD) one way and $5.33 (50 MAD) return, bought from the driver in cash. Both figures come from the official destination guide and an airport information site rather than from the airport operator, which publishes no fare, and the bus network changed operator so no post-handover fare table exists. Carry the money in small notes and treat it as the last published figure rather than a guaranteed tariff. For two people the pair costs $6.39 (60 MAD) against a medina zone taxi at $12.78 (120 MAD), which is where the decision turns.
Is there a prepaid taxi desk at Marrakech airport?
Yes. The airport operator announced a single-window desk branded kech.cab at the arrivals exit, where you state your destination, pay by card or cash at the rate fixed by the competent authorities, and get a ticket showing the taxi's number and queue position. We could not read the announcement first-hand, because the operator's news page returned 403, so the description here is reported rather than verified. If the desk is open when you land it removes the negotiation completely.
Is there an Uber, or a train, from Marrakech airport?
There are no Ubers in Marrakech, and no train either. Morocco has no legal framework for ride-hailing at all: Uber withdrew from the country in 2018 and has not returned, Careem's legality was challenged before the Conseil de la Concurrence, and Bolt and inDrive operate outside the rules, so the app on your phone will either show nothing or offer you an unlicensed car with no regulated recourse. The one app that works lawfully is Heetch, because it dispatches already-licensed taxis rather than running its own drivers. There is no rail link to the airport and no tram or metro anywhere in Marrakech: Gare de Marrakech sits on Avenue Hassan II in Gueliz, which is where the bus you are reading about ends up, and the rest of the network is here.
Can a car take me all the way to my riad?
Usually not. Most riad addresses sit on lanes too narrow for any vehicle, so a transfer described as door-to-door means the nearest accessible point, and the last stretch is on foot with a porter. Ask your property for that drop-off point by name before you travel and give it your arrival time so somebody is waiting. The last two hundred metres explains what this looks like at midnight, and where to stay compares it against a hotel where the car reaches the lobby.
What if I land after the last bus?
Then the choice is the rank or a booked transfer, because the last departure from the airport is 21:15 and there is no night service on the printed timetable. The rank runs to the zone tariff with a night rate applying from 21:00 in summer and 20:00 in winter until six in the morning, and the night city figure on that table is $12.78 (120 MAD). A private transfer booked before you fly fixes the number and puts a named driver in arrivals, which is the version most people prefer after a night flight.
