Marrakech Tours, Compared Against The Gate Price

The honest shape of this decision is that in the medina the tour buys context and in the mountains it buys the vehicle. Inside the walls almost everything is a ten-minute walk from everything else and every gate sells at the door, so a guide is a choice. Outside the walls there is no bus to the Ourika Valley, no scheduled service to Ouzoud and no carrier at all to Ait Ben Haddou, so the minibus is the trip.

Why one day is the wrong unit for the desert

The Agafay plateau, which most listings call "the desert", is stone and scrub about an hour from the city, and it is what a Marrakech evening can honestly reach. The sand sea people picture is Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, and the only itinerary the national rail operator will sell for it is a 15 h 25 coach and train combination via Meknès arriving at six the next morning. The coach operator CTM does not serve Merzouga at all.

Anything advertised as a one-day Sahara trip from Marrakech goes to Agafay, and this page marks the difference in the table above.

Take the most-reviewed medina circuit on this page, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, souk and medina, listed at $17.58 with 7,296 reviews. Both monuments are Ministry of Culture sites at $10.65 (100 MAD) each, paid in cash at the window, so the real cost of that morning for one adult is $38.88. The same two gates on your own are $21.30, and the difference, $17.58, is what four hours of a licensed guide costs.

That is a defensible price. It is simply not the price on the card.

The listings that cost less than the door

Three do it. The Bahia Palace guided visit at $8 includes the entry that costs $10.65 (100 MAD) at the window, which makes an hour and a half of guiding cheaper than free. The El Badi entry ticket and the Saadian Tombs entry ticket both list at $17.44 against a $10.65 gate, so those two go the other way and you are paying $6.79 for a postcard and the convenience. Read the direction of the difference before you book, not the badge.

Where the gate itself is the bargain

Dar Si Said charges $3.20 (30 MAD), the lowest fare of any museum in the city and the only one with no nationality split, and no listing on this page sells it. The Ben Youssef Madrasa at $5.33 (50 MAD) is the cheapest serious monument here. Neither needs a booking, and neither has a queue that a ticket would let you skip.

The two-tier fare, and the Friday that is not yours

At the four Ministry monuments a Moroccan national or resident pays $3.20 (30 MAD) where an international visitor pays $10.65 (100 MAD), and Moroccan nationals enter free every Friday and on the first day of national and religious holidays. Visitors do not, the gates stay open, and the fare stays 100 MAD. Friday and holiday openings sets out which days those are.

Start with the gate. Every monument in this city sells at the door in cash, so a sold-out entry listing costs you nothing but the walk: the four Ministry monuments open at 09:00 and close at 17:00, and the ticket windows do not run out. The one real exception is the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, which sells online only, states that its own site is the sole authorised seller, and issues named, timed tickets.

If those slots are gone for your date, they are genuinely gone, and no reseller can conjure one.

For a day trip, change the operator, not the day

The Ourika, Ouzoud and Essaouira runs are each sold by several operators leaving within an hour of each other, so a full minibus rarely means a full road. The cheapest Ouzoud day and the boat-ride version are the same falls at $14 and $16.74. For Essaouira there is also a scheduled alternative: Supratours runs seven coaches a day from the Gueliz station at $10.65 (100 MAD), CTM one at 08:30 at $11.18 (105 MAD), and both take three hours each way.

For the mountains, go to the trailhead and hire there

Shared grand taxis leave for Asni and Imlil from the Bab er Robb stand and for Setti Fatma from the same side of the city, running when full rather than to a timetable. The seat fares are set per route by the local authority and are not published anywhere online, which is worth knowing before you are quoted one. In Imlil the village bureau des guides is where a walking guide is hired, and the licence law is the same one described below.

For the hammam and the food tours, the substitution is easy

Neither has a fixed inventory. A riad spa will book a scrub and massage at its own counter rate on the day, and the food stalls on Jemaa el-Fna set up after sunset and take cash per dish. What a guided version buys is somebody ordering, which is worth more on a first night than on a fourth.

Loi 05-12, published in Bulletin Officiel 6088, regulates the profession of tourist guide and repeals the previous 1997 statute by name. Article 5 states that nobody may practise as a tourist guide without an approval issued by the competent administration, and article 10 requires guides to carry a professional card and a badge issued by that administration and to present them at any time on the request of sworn officials. That is the basis for the UK Foreign Office advice to check for an official badge, and it is why the badge, not a review score, is the credential.

Two categories, exercised exclusively

The law creates city and circuit guides on one side and natural-space guides on the other, and each category is exercised exclusively. In practice that is the difference between the person who takes you round Bahia Palace and the person who walks you up from Imlil. Article 12 says guide tariffs are set on an indicative basis only, by the national federation, so there is no official fee to quote and nothing to appeal to when a price is named.

The penalties fall on the guide, not on you

Article 21 punishes usurping the title of tourist guide under article 381 of the Penal Code: three months to two years and a fine of 120 to 5,000 dirhams. A licensed guide who sells, rents or lends his card or badge faces six months to a year and 10,000 to 20,000 dirhams. A company operating without approval faces 100,000 to 200,000 dirhams.

Nothing in the law penalises the visitor, which is the part the scare stories get wrong.

What the Foreign Office actually warns about

Its Morocco advice says that it is common for people posing as official tourist guides to harass tourists, and that in a medina quarter you should make sure a guide has an official badge and permission from the local authority. It does not name the square, the henna stalls or the photograph fees that blogs attribute to it. Safety and scams sets out what is and is not officially stated.

• No calèche tariff exists. The horse-drawn carriages are regulated by a permanent municipal order of 1935 and the commune does not publish a price list; every figure quoted, including on the Majorelle and carriage listing, comes from an operator. Ask the driver to state the price before boarding.
• No petit-taxi meter figures are published by the commune, the wilaya or the ministry. What is published is that the meter is compulsory. That makes the meter, not a price list, the protection, and it is why the airport transfer listings sell a fixed price at all.
• No public hammam price is set by any authority, and there is no published legal distinction between a neighbourhood hammam and a spa hammam. The two hammam listings here are private venues quoting their own rates.
• No entrance fee is published for the ksar at Ait Ben Haddou, for the Ouzoud falls or for the Agafay camps. The province of Azilal hosts a page for the falls and states no admission; the ministry domains that would carry a monument tariff have no reachable address from outside Morocco.

And one thing the listings themselves do not settle

Group size is stated on about half of these and left blank on the rest. Where it is given it ranges from a private party capped at twelve on the night food tour with dinner to an unstated shared coach on the long day trips. If a small group matters to you, the listing page is the only place that answer exists, and on many of them it is simply absent.
